At number five is junior linebacker Nico Sawtelle who enters this season at a key and new position for him.

#54 Nico Sawtelle – 6’2″ 222 lbs. – Junior – Linebacker – Jensen Beach, FL (Jensen Beach HS)

Sawtelle played in 12 games last year as the starter as the weakside linebacker. He totaled 54 tackles with 4.5 TFL (1.5 sacks) with 2 interceptions. He had a good year at the weakside next to Auggie Sanchez who anchored the middle of the defense. However, entering the 2018 season, Sawtelle is moving over to middle linebacker, a tough position with big shoes to fill.

Not only does Sawtelle have to fill the shoes left behind by Sanchez, he will also have to learn how to lead the defense, calling the plays and getting everyone into position, on each play. Lucky for USF, Sawtelle has been playing well this spring and with Brian Jean-Mary and Coach Strong, he has two incredible defensive minded coaches that will be able to help him learn the position on the fly.

Learning a new position could be tough for him at the start, I think Sawtelle will settle in just fine and he will become a solid middle linebacker for the Bulls which is something they need with the lack of known depth behind him.
