USF football: Reviewing the 2012 recruiting class

2012 wasn’t a great year for our Bulls. A 3-9 record and just one conference win made it rough, but all that aside, here is a break down of that year’s recruiting class and what they did during their respective USF careers. 

Kameron Davis – 6’6″ 280 lbs. – 3-stars – Offensive lineman – Oakland Park, FL (Northeast HS)

Davis transferred out after the spring practices were over.

Tashon Whitehurst – 6’2″ 190 lbs. – 3-stars – Linebacker – Gainesville, FL (Gainesville HS)

Whitehurst played in 10 games in 2012 (1 start) and recorded 15 tackles with 1 sack and recovered a fumble. He played in 10 games in 2013 and recorded 6 tackles and then played in 12 games in 2014 (4 starts), recording 49 tackles with 5 TFL (2 sacks). In 2015, Whitehurst played in 10 games (1 start) and had 35 tackles with 1.5 TFL.

Michael Pierre – 5’11” 200 lbs. – 3-stars – Huntington Beach, CA ( Golden West CC)

Pierre redshirted in 2012 and then played in 8 games (1 start) in 2013, recording 41 carries for 114 yards and 3 catches for 32 yards. Pierre left football in 2014 after a medical issue forced him to give up the game.

Guito Ervilus – 6’5″ 225 lbs. – 3-stars – Athlete – Orlando, FL (Oak Ridge HS)

Ervilus did not play in 2012 and then appeared in one game in 2013, moving from tight end to defensive end. He would transfer out in 2014 and head to Valdosta State.

Lawrence Martin – 6’4″ 280 lbs. – 2-stars – Offensive lineman – Merced, CA (Merced CC)

Martin played in 2 games in 2012, starting one game. In 2013, he started 2 games at right guard but moved to fullback/tight end later in the year, becoming an extra blocker. He appeared in 10 games in this role, starting 6 of them to wrap up his quick USF career.

Josh Brown – 6’1″ 190 lbs. – 2-stars – Defensive back – Yuma, AZ (Arizona Western CC)

Brown played in 8 games in 2012, starting one game, and recording 11 tackles with 1 TFL. In 2013, he did not play in a game and left after that season.

Tevin Mims – 6’4″ 250 lbs. – 3-stars – Defensive end – Corsicana, TX (Navarro JC)

Mims started 11 games in 2012 (missed one game due to injury) and recorded 35 tackles with 3.5 TFL (2 sacks) and forced one fumble. In 2013, he played in 10 games (8 starts, missed two games due to an ankle injury) and recorded 40 tackles with 6 TFL (1.5 sacks).

Fidel Montgomery – 6′ 183 lbs. – 3-stars – Safety – Summit, MS (Southwest Mississippi CC)

Montgomery played in 12 games (1 start) in the secondary and on special teams, recording 19 tackles and forced a fumble. In 2013, he played in 12 games and recorded 35 tackles and recovered a fumble in his quick last year of his two year career.

Chandlor Mathews – 6’5″ 290 lbs. – 3-star – Offensive tackle – Poplarville, MS (Pearl River CC)

Mathews never enrolled at USF.

D’Vario Montgomery – 6’3″ 215 lbs. – 4-stars – Wide receiver – Winter Park, FL (Winter Park HS)

Montgomery played in 11 games and caught 6 passes for 65 yards in his one and only year at USF. He would transfer to Iowa State the following season.

James Hamilton – 6’4″ 325 lbs. – 3-stars – Defensive tackle – Orlando, FL (Olympia HS)

Hamilton played in 11 games in 2012 and recorded 12 tackles with 1 TFL. In 2013, he played in 2012, he recorded 17 tackles with 5 TFL. In 2014 he played in 10 games, recording 5 tackles with 1 TFL. In 2015, he started 13 games with 31 tackles to wrap up his USF career.

Eric Lee – 6’3″ 226 lbs. – 3-stars – Defensive end – Daphne, AL (Daphne AL)

Lee played in 11 games in 2012 (5 starts) and had 17 tackles with 1.5 TFL. In 2013, he played in 11 games but did not record a stat. In 2014, he started 12 games with 28 tackles with 6 TFL. In 2015, he started 12 games (named 2nd team AAC) and recorded 45 tackles with 12 TFL (5 sacks). Lee is now part of the New England Patriots.

Jarvis McCall – 6’2″ 185 lbs. – 3-stars – Safety – Seffner, FL (Armwood HS)

McCall never enrolled at USF.

Kofi Amichia -6’4″ 255 lbs. – 3-stars – Offensive tackle – Powder Springs, FL (McEachern HS)

Amichia took a redshirt in 2012 and did not play in 2013. He played in 4 games in 2014 and started 2 games at right tackle. In 2015, he started all 13 games at right tackle. In the 2016 season, he started at all 13 games at left tackle and was named first team AAC. He was then drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the 2017 draft in the 6th round.

LaMarlin Wiggins – 6’2″ 181 lbs. – 3-stars – Wide receiver – Plant City, FL (Plant City HS)

Wiggins never came to USF and went to East Mississippi CC instead.

Chris Bivins – 5’11” 175 lbs. – 3-stars – Defensive back – Gainesville, FL (Gainesville HS)

Bivins played in 4 games in 2012, totaling 1 tackle and missed the rest of the year due to a torn ACL. He would transfer out after that one season.

Sean Price – 6’4″ 232 lbs. – 4-stars – Tight end – Citra, FL (North Marion HS)

Price played in 12 games (3 starts) in 2012, recording 21 catches for 209 yards with a touchdown. In 2013, he played in 11 games (9 starts) and had 21 catches for 185 yards. In 2014, Price played in 11 games (9 starts) and had 14 catches for 207 yards. In 2015, Price played in 13 games (12 starts) and had 19 receptions for 290 yards with 5 touchdowns and was named 2nd team AAC in his final USF year.

Daniel Perry – 6’7″ 212 lbs. – 3-stars – Defensive end – Ft. Lauderdale, FL (University School)

Perry took a redshirt in 2012 and appeared in 7 games in 2013, being named AAC All Academic. He was forced to give up his playing career due to a medical condition after that year.

Jalen Spencer – 6’1″ 185 lbs. – 3-stars – Athlete – Pensacola, FL (Pensacola HS)

Spencer redshirted in 2012 and then appeared in 2013, he played in one game before he missed the rest of the season due to a shoulder injury. In 2014, he played in 4 games before missing the rest of the year due to various injuries.

Alex Mut – 6’5″ 185 lbs. – 3-stars – Wide receiver – Punta Gorda, FL (Charlotte HS)

In 2012, Mut took a redshirt after taking a grey shirt the year before due to an injury he suffered in his senior season. In 2013, he played in 5 games before a shoulder injury took him off the field (he was named All AAC Academic team). In 2014 he played in 11 games (1 start) and again was named All AAC Academic team. In 2015, he appeared in 10 games and then in 12 games in 2016, catching his lone career pass that season.
