The Bulls, 10-1, won 6 to 3 over Toledo, completing the 3-game sweep and extending the winning streak to 9 games for the Bulls. The pitching dominated and the offense, despite leaving 13 runners on base, got enough done in this game.
In the 2nd inning, the Bulls went ahead 2 to 0 after RBI singles from Garrett Zech and Kevin Merrell to open up the game. In the third, Toledo took a 3 to 2 as Peter Strzelecki struggled with his command. In the 4th USF backed him up, going ahead 5 to 3 thanks to an RBI single from Merrell and an RBI single from Coco Montes. In the 8th, Joe Genord reached on a fielder’s choice, allowing Kevin Merrell to score to make it 6 to 3. USF left a lot of opportunities on base in this game, but they didn’t suffer for it and got it done.
Merrell was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored, drove in a run and stole 3 bases. Montes was 1 for 3 with the RBI and drew 2 walks. Zech was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and scored 2 runs in the game.
Peter Strzelecki went just 3.2 innings, allowing 4 hits, 3 runs, walking 4 and striking out 2 batters. Noah Yager (1-0) replaced him, going 1.1 innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Michael Farley went 2 innings, allowing a hit, 1 walk and struck out 3. Andrew Perez replaced him, working the last two innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 2, picking up the save in the process. This rotation and staff continue to pitch well and its a lot of fun to watch even when the starter is not able to give them a big outing. They just get it done.
USF will host Jacksonville on Tuesday night (game begins at 6:30 PM) as they look to keep the streak going.
