Phoenix Sanders was impressive in the solid USF Friday night win.

The Bulls, 4-1, won 5 to 1 over Miami (Ohio) in the first of four games to open up the big weekend series. The USF offense did its job while Phoenix Sanders and the staff did the rest on the mound.

In the first inning, Kevin Merrell led off with a triple and then scored on an RBI single from Coco Montes to put USF ahead 1 to 0. In the 2nd, Garrett Zech hit an RBI single, scoring Chris Chatfield to make it 2 to 0. In the 3rd, Miami loaded the bases with just one out, but Phoenix Sanders was able to work his way out of trouble with no damage done.

In the bottom of the third, Tyler Dietrich hit a 2-run single to make it 4 to 0 in the game. USF would make it 5 to 0 in the 6th on an RBI single from Merrell. In the 8th, Miami hit a solo home run but that would be it for the Redhawks in this game.

Merrell was 2 for 3 with the triple, an RBI, scored 2 runs, and stole a base. Luke Borders was 2 for 4 with a double and scored a run. David Villar was also 2 for 4 in the game.

Phoenix Sanders dominated again, going 7 innings, allowing 5 hits, 3 walks and struck out 10 batters in his second straight great start. Carson Ragsdale struggled, allowing the home run and walked a batter. Joe Cavallaro went the final 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and struck out 5 batters to close out the game. It was a great game from start to finish.

The two sides will play two games on Saturday with the first one starting at 2 PM. Let’s see what the Bulls can do with a taxing day ahead and another game on Sunday.
