This was one hell of a game (Image: USF Athletics)

The Bulls, 1-0, rallied to win 9 to 4 over Iowa in the season opener. USF was down 4 to 0 entering the 9th inning, but the Bulls were able to rally to take the game in a dramatic rally.

In the first inning, Iowa went ahead 1 to 0 early in the game. In the third inning, the Bulls loaded the bases, but could not get a run across despite a great opportunity. In the 5th, the Hawkeyes make it 2 to 0. In the 7th and 8th, the Hawkeyes made it 4 to 0 and it looked bad but man, the Bulls came roaring back. In the 8th, the Bulls exploded for 9 runs. Chris Chatfield started it with an RBI single and after that, they unloaded on Iowa. Luke Borders, Cameron Montgomery, David Villar, and Kevin Merrell with a 2 run single all drove in runs. It was a crazy inning and helped this team come back, Coach Kingston has to be happy after that.

Merrell was 2 for 5 with 2 RBIs, scored a run, and stole a base. Luke Borders was 2 for 5 with a 2-run triple. Coco Montes went 3 for 4 with a double and scored a run.

Phoenix Sanders went 5 innings in his 2017 debut, allowing 5 hits, 2 runs, walking 1 batter and struck out 8 (90 pitches). Joe Cavallaro went 2 innings, allowing 1 hit, 1 run, 1 walk and struck out 3 batters. DJ Roberts (1-0) went 1 inning, allowing a hit, 1 run, walking 2 batters and struck out one batter. Andrew Perez dominated in the 9th, allowing a walk and striking out one batter.

The Bulls will send Shane McClanahan to the mound on Saturday afternoon (game begins at noon to avoid weather) as they look to take the series early. Hopefully the offense shows up earlier.
