USF couldn’t take the second game of the series (Image:

The Bulls, 1-1, fell 4 to 2 to Iowa in the second game of the three game opening series. The Bulls and Hawkeyes had to wait through a long rain delay, but they finally got the game finished after a noon start.

In the first inning, Kevin Merrell tripled and then scored on an RBI ground out by Luke Borders to put USF ahead 1 to 0. In the 6th, the Hawkeyes hit two solo home runs off of Ryan Valdes to take the slight lead before the rains came down. The rain delay lasted for over 2 hours, but they were able to get the tarps off the field and completed the game.

In the 7th, Joe Genord hit a solo home run to make it 2 to 2 in the game. The Hawkeyes would go on to score 2 runs in the top of the 9th to take the game late from the Bulls.

Merrell was 2 for 4 with a triple and a run scored. Genord finished the game 1 for 4.

Shane McClanahan went 4 innings in his collegiate debut, allowing a hit, walked 2 and struck out 9 while reaching in the mid-90s with his fastball. It was a super impressive start for the young ace. Ryan Valdes went 2 inning, allowing the two home runs, and struck out 3 batters. He looked strong in his return after missing all of last year. Michael Farley (0-1) went the final 3 inning, allowing 3 hits, 2 runs, and struck out 4 in his 2017 debut (also missed the 2016 season).

The Bulls will send Peter Strzelecki to the mound on Sunday (game begins at noon) as they look to take the series. The Bulls will need the offense to get going early and will need the same kind of pitching effort to take the game.
