The Bulls, 24-31, won 4 to 2 over ECU today to begin the AAC tournament. Key 9th inning walks helped the Bulls achieve the victory and put them in great shape heading into tomorrow.
In the 7th, David Villar doubled and then scored on a sac fly from Duke Stunkel to put USF ahead 1 to 0 late in the game. Kevin Merrell followed him with an RBI single to bring Cameron Montgomery home and made it 2 to 0. In the bottom of the 7th, ECU tied the game on a 2-run double (thought Cameron Montgomery made the catch but it popped out of the glove and was ruled a drop). In the 9th, USF loaded the bases, followed by Luke Maglich drawing a walk to score a run, making it 3 to 2. Joe Genord drew another walk to make it 4 to 2. The Bulls took advantage of the free passes late and it paid off.
Kevin Merrell was 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored a run. Luke Maglich was 0 for 4 but got that walk that notched him an RBI. David Villar was 1 for 5 with a double and scored a run. Joe Genord was 1 for 4 with the RBI as well.
Brandon Lawson went 7 innings, allowing 7 hits, 2 runs, 3 walks and struck out 8 batters. Joe Cavallaro (6-3) relieved him, going an inning, allowing 2 walks and struck out 1 batter. Phoenix Sanders (S 1) closed it out, allowing a walk, a hit, and struck out 1 batter.
