The Bulls, 44-15, must win today if they want to stay alive in the regionals of the NCAA tournament. They will be facing off against FAMU, who lost 1 to 0 to 7th ranked FSU last night and were no hit in the process. USF must be ready for a tough battle in this one (game begins at 2:30 PM pending weather as always).
FAMU enters the tournament after batting .297 as a team and have a staff ERA of 3.87 (opponents are batting .263 against them) during the regular season (note these stats do not reflect their tournament game against FSU).
Leading the FAMU batting order is junior outfielder Tashayla Irvis who is batting .392 with 3 doubles, with a home run, has driven in 13 runs, has scored 28 runs and is 18 for 19 in steal attempts. Senior infielder Jessica Nathan is batting .368 with 8 doubles, 8 triples, with 3 home runs, with 20 RBIs, has scored 32 runs and is 23 for 27 in steal attempts. Redshirt senior infielder Kieifi Myrick is batting .330 with 6 doubles, with 3 triples, 5 home runs with 22 RBIs and has scored 21 runs on the year. Erica Nunn and the pitching staff only allowed 2 runs in the loss to South Carolina yesterday and will likely need another shut down performance to keep FAMU off of the boards. Considering they were no hit last night, they will likely be aggressive right from the start.
Leading the FAMU pitching staff is junior RHP Kenya Pereira is 11-12 entering the tournament (3.30 ERA) and has thrown 150.2 innings, allowing 128 hits, 91 runs, 82 walks and has struck out 113 batters. Sophomore RHP Veronica Burse is 6-10 and has thrown 102.2 innings, allowing 128 hits, 96 runs, 61 walks and has struck out 64 batters. They were able to hold FSU to just one run yesterday, so they are a solid staff and after the Bulls could not get a run across yesterday, it could be another tough day at the plate for the Bulls.
This could be it. Lose here and head home. Win and survive to fight another day. Let’s do this!
