The Bulls, 23-28 (8-13), won 6 to 5 over 21st ranked ECU today to take the series two games to one. The offense was able to rally after being down early and the pitching was able to keep the Pirate bats quiet down the stretch.
In the 2nd, Garrett Zech drew a bases loaded walk to bring home a run to put USF ahead 1 to 0 to start the game (too bad they couldn’t get another run in that inning). In the bottom of the 2nd, ECU jumped out to a 5 to 1 lead as Joe Cavallaro struggled (he did recover after that inning). In the 3rd, Joe Genord hit a 2-run home run to make it 5 to 3 in the game. In the 5th, Kevin Merrell hit a 2-run double to tie the game up at 5 to 5. In the 6th, Luke Borders mashed his third home run of the weekend to put USF ahead again 6 to 5. The pitching would do the rest as the Bulls hung onto the victory.
Kevin Merrell was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and drew 3 walks in the game. He went 6 for 11 with 4 walks and drove in 4 runs. Luke Borders was 3 for 5 with a home run, scored 2 runs in the game and drew a walk. He was 7 for 14 overall this weekend, driving in 7 runs (home runs in each game) and scored 5 runs overall). Joe Genord was 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs on his home run and scored 3 runs overall. Tyler Dietrich was 1 for 5 overall and scored a run. The offense was able to overcome that 2nd inning to help get the series victory.
Joe Cavallaro went 7 innings, allowing 5 hits, 5 runs, 1 walk and struck out 2 batters. Cavallaro was able to bounce back after that bad 2nd inning and got it done in a solid start for the Bulls. Tommy Eveld went the final 2 innings, allowing a walk and struck out 3 batters.
The Bulls will host Jacksonville on Tuesday night at 6:30 PM in the last non-conference game of the year for the Bulls. Let’s hope they carry this momentum over into the weekday game.
