The Bulls, 21-26 (6-12), are on the road as they head up to Gainesville to take on Florida (game begins at 7 PM). The Gators are 40-8 (16-7 in the SEC) and are 26-3 at home this year. This is going to be a tough test for the Bulls in this late season game.
The Bulls enter this game batting .245 overall as a team. The staff also enters with an ERA of 3.92 (opponents are batting .242 against them). UF is batting .287 overall as a team and has a staff ERA of 2.81 (opponents are batting .221 against them). The USF pitching staff will have to be sharp to slow down the Gators offense.
Leading the UF offense is junior first baseman Peter Alonso (out of Plant HS) who is batting .345 with 13 doubles, 9 home runs (leads the team), 44 RBIs and has scored 38 runs on the year. Sophomore catcher Mike Rivera is batting .272 with 7 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs, has 44 RBIs and has scored 28 runs on the season. Junior outfielder Buddy Reed is batting .284 with 7 doubles, 5 triples, 4 home runs, has 27 RBIs, has scored 41 runs and leads them with 22 steals in 24 attempts. They have power and speed but what else would you expect from the top ranked team in the country.
The Gators pitching staff has held opponents down all season long, no matter who starts their games. To close out games is junior RHP Shaun Anderson who is 3-0 (1.08 ERA) with 10 saves after throwing 33.1 innings, allowing 24 hits, 5 turns, 5 walks and has struck out 46 batters on the season. If the Gators have the lead late, Anderson will be tough to score against. It’st just one heck of a staff that will make life tough for this young USF squad that continues to battle.
This game won’t be easy at all, let’s be real honest here. USF just got swept by Tulane and are now on the road against the top ranked team in the country, this doesn’t sound that great. Hopefully they can get it together and pull off a huge upset. It would be fun to see happen late in the season.
