The Bulls, 36-10 (8-1), won 1 to 0 over Uconn, completing the huge sweep of the Huskies in conference play. It took a clutch late inning hit and some terrific pitching again, but USF was able to prevail.
The Bulls had several chances throughout the game while getting runners aboard, but could not push anyone across. In the 6th, Uconn had a threat going, but USF was able to get out of thanks to terrific defense again. In the bottom of the inning, after Monica Santos got on base, Erica Nunn (with two outs) was able to drive her in for the only run of the game. It was another tough fight, but USF came away with the victory in a evenly matched series where the Huskies shut down the USF offense and made life tough.
Kristen Wyckoff went 1 for 3 with a steal. Juli Weber was 1 for with a double and a steal in the game. Monica Santos was 1 for 3 and scored that lone run for the USF offense. Seriously, two games in a row where the Bulls have been held to just a single run, but they have come away with two victories so I’ll take it.
Cheyenne Eggens went 4 innings in the start, allowing just 2 hits in her start. Erica Nunn (20-6) relieved her, going the final 3 innings, allowing a hit, and struck out 4 batters. She had the key hit for the Bulls as well, making her the MVP for this series. I mean, she has been the ace pitcher and now was the key bat. She is having quite the season for the Bulls.
The Bulls will hit the road to take on Memphis on Friday (game begins at 6 PM) to begin another key 3-game conference series.
