The Bulls, 16-16 (2-4), won 7 to 5 over the Memphis Tigers today, avoiding the sweep and helping them getting back to .500 on the season. Solid relief from Brad Labozzetta and the bat of David Villar helped the Bulls get the victory.
In the 2nd, the Tigers went ahead 1 to 0 to take the early lead. In the 3rd, Luke Borders hit a 3-run inside the park home run to help the Bulls take the 3 to 1 lead. In the 4th, the Tigers got one back to make it 3 to 2. In the bottom of the inning, Kevin Merrell grounded out, allowing Garrett Zech to score, pushing the score to 4 to 2. However, in the 5th, the Tigers scored two to tie the game at 4 to 4 and then took the lead 5 to 4. In the 6th, David Villar hit an RBI single to tie the game at 5. In the 7th, Kevin Merrell drove in a run to give USF the lead at 6 to 5. In the 8th, Villar added to the lead with a solo shot, putting USF ahead 7 to 5 for good.
Kevin Merrell was 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, scored a run, and stole a base. Coco Montes was 2 for 5. David Villar was 4 for 5 with the home run, drove in 2 total and scored 2 runs. Garrett Zech was 2 for 4 and scored a run. It wasn’t a pretty game, but the bats got it done for the Bulls late in the game after the Tigers had taken the lead late.
Joe Cavallaro went 5 innings, allowing 3 hits, 5 runs, 5 walks, and struck out 3 batters. Brad Labozzetta (2-4) went 4 innings in relief, allowing just 2 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 5 batters. Labozzetta was able to come into the game, shut down the Tigers offense, and allow the USF offense to get them back in the game and take it late.
The Bulls will host UNF on Tuesday night (game begins at 6:30 PM) for a quick non-conference match-up. Let’s hope they can build some momentum after this game moving forward.
