The Bulls, 15-13 (1-2), fell in the series finale to Cincinnati, falling 4 to 3 in 14 innings, dropping the opening series in AAC play. The Bearcats just got it done late.
In the 2nd and third, the Bearcats tacked on a run in each inning to go up 2 to 0 on USF in the series finale. In the 4th, Chris Chatfield hit a solo home run to bring the score to 2 to 1. In the bottom of the inning, Cincinnati made it 3 to 1 to extend their lead. In the 9th, there were two outs when Cameron Montgomery hit a 2-run home run to tie the game in the 9th at 3 to 3. The two sides would battle into the 14th inning when the Bearcats scored a run on a double, ending the game and taking the series from USF.
Coco Montes was 2 for 6 in the game with a walk. Tyler Dietrich was 2 for 6. Cameron Montgomery was 1 for 6 overall with the 2-run home run. Garrett Zech was 1 for 3 and drew 2 walks in the game.
Joe Cavallaro went 7 innings, allowing 7 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and struck out 9 batters. Tommy Eveld went 5 innings, allowing 2 hits, 3 walks and struck out 6 batters (it’s pretty rare for a “closer” to pitch nearly an entire start, unreal). Andrew Perez went 1.2 innings, allowing a hit, the game winning run, walked one batter and struck out 2 batters.
USF is scheduled to head to Stetson on Tuesday night (game begins at 6:30 PM) as they try to bounce back after suffering two losses in a row. Let’s see how they respond next after this tough opening AAC series.
