Ultimate Team in USF Football History: Safety

Time to vote for the last member of the ultimate team in the secondary, the safety position. There have been some great ones over the years from Anthony Henry, Nate Allen, Jerrell Young, and others. Time to vote for the top two starters and who would be behind them on the depth chart. Let’s get voting!

Devin Abraham – 5’9” 186 lbs. – Tarpon Springs, FL (East Lake HS)

After spending 2014 at the nickel (corner) spot, Abraham started 13 games at safety for the Bulls in 2015. He had 51 tackles, 2 TFL (1 sack), 3 interceptions, 3 PBUs, and recovered a fumble.

Nate Godwin – 5’10” 202 lbs. – Tampa, FL (Freedom HS)

In 2013, he started 9 games (12 overall) and had 49 tackles with 1 TFL, 1 interception and had 3 PBUs. In 2014, he started 9 games (12 overall) and had 72 tackles with 1 TFL, 2 PBUs, and recovered a fumble. In 2015, Godwin started 3 games (13 overall) and had 63 tackles with 1 TFL and 3 PBUs.

Tajee Fullwood – 6’2” 203 lbs. – Tampa, FL (Tampa Bay Tech)

In 2014 he started 3 games (8 overall) and had 5 tackles with 1 TFL. In 2015 he started 3 games (13 overall) and had 38 tackles with 1 TFL, 2 PBUs, and forced 2 fumbles.

Jamie Byrd – 5’11” 184 lbs. – Dade City, FL (Pasco HS) (Iowa Western CC)

In 2015, Byrd started all 13 games. He was listed at the (Husky) position, but it was more of a safety spot so that is why he is listed in this bracket. In 2015 he had 88 tackles, 11 TFL (5 sacks), 3 interceptions, 4 PBUs, forced 2 fumbles and recovered one. In 2014, his first year, he started all 12 games. He recorded 95 tackles with 2.5 TFL, 2 interceptions, 3 PBUs, and forced a fumble.

Mark Joyce – 6’1” 200 lbs. – Deland, FL (Deland HS)

In 2010 he started 1 game (13 overall) and had 33 tackles with 1 interception and forced a fumble. He played in 12 games in 2011 and had 21 tackles, 1 TFL, 3 PBUs, and recovered a fumble. In 2012, he started 11 games (12 overall) and had 74 tackles (.5 TFL) and 1 PBU. In 2013, he started 10 games and had 53 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 2 interceptions, 2 PBUs and forced a fumble. He was dismissed from the team late in the year.

JaQuez Jenkins – 6’2” 185 lbs. – St. Petersburg, FL (Lakewood HS)

In 2012 he started 8 games (12 overall) and had 53 tackles with 4 TFL, 1 PBU, and forced a fumble and recovered another. In 2013 he started 2 games at safety (remember he played 2 games at corner) and had 24 tackles with 2 TFL and 1 PBU. He was dismissed at the end of that year.

Hassan Childs – 6’1” 180 lbs. – Kissimmee, FL (Osceola HS)

Childs started 2 games in 2013 (6 overall) and had 10 tackles with 3 interceptions. In 2014 he played in 12 games and 2 tackles as a reserve. He played in 2 games in 2015 but did not record any stats as his year got stopped by injury.

Jon Lejiste – 6’ 205 lbs. – Delray Beach, FL (Atlantic Community HS)

Lejiste (after a redshirt in 2008) played in 13 games in 2009 and had 29 tackles with 1 TFL, 1 forced fumble, and had 1 PBU. In 2010 he started 13 games and had 43 tackles with 7.5 TFL (4 sacks) with 1 interception, 2 PBUs, and forced 2 fumbles. In 2011 he started 12 games and had 47 tackles, 2 TFL (1 sack), 1 interception, 2 PBUs, forced a fumble and recovered 3 fumbles. In 2012 he started 4 games (8 overall) and had 18 tackles, 1 interception, and had 2 PBUs.  In my personal opinion, he was one of the hardest hitters I saw during my college days.

Fidel Montgomery – 6’ 187 lbs. – Marianna, FL (Marianna HS) (Southwest Miss. CC)

In 2012 he started a game (12 overall) and had 19 tackles and forced a fumble. In 2013 he played in 12 games and had 35 tackles with a fumble recovery. He was a hard hitter and a special teams contributor.

Jerrell Young – 6’1” 209 lbs. – St. Petersburg, FL (Gibbs HS)

Young stated 1 game in 2008 (13 overall) and had 25 tackles with 1 TFL and 1 PBU. In 2009 he started 6 games (9 overall and missed 3 games due to a dislocated elbow) and had 21 tackles with 2 PBUs. In 2010 he started 11 game (12 overall) and had 41 tackles, 1.5 TFL, 3 interceptions and 3 PBUs. In 2011 he started 12 games (2nd team Big East that year) and had 51 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 interceptions, 2 PBUs and forced a fumble. JYoung was always one of my favorites.

Mistral Raymond – 6’2” 192 lbs. – Palmetto, FL (Palmetto HS) (Ellsworth CC)

Raymond started 4 games in 2009 (13 overall) in the nickel position, but for this voting I had to put him at safety. He had 40 tackles, 2 TFL and 1 interception. In 2010 he started a game (10 games at cornerback) and had 56 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1 interception, and 7 PBUs. Just remember the meerkats, always remember those.

 

Nate Allen – 6’2” 207 lbs. – Cape Coral, FL (Cape Coral HS)

Allen played in 9 games in 2006 and had 2 tackles. In 2007 he started all 13 game sand had 76 tackles with 2 TFL, 4 interceptions, 8 PBUs, and recovered 3 fumbles. In 2008 he started all 13 games, recording 53 tackles with 2 TFL (1 sack) and 1 interception. In 2009 he started all 13 games again and had 85 tackles, 1 TFL, 4 interceptions, 4 PBUs, and recovered a fumble. He was named 1st Team Big East by ESPN that year and 2nd team by the coaches.

Carlton Williams – 6’4” 210 lbs. – Valdosta, GA (Valdosta HS)

In 2005 he started 12 games, recording 66 tackles (.5 TFL), 2 interceptions, 5 passes defended and recovered a fumble. In 2006 he started 13 games and had 43 tackles, 4 passes defended and forced a fumble. In 2007 he started 13 games and had 69 tackles, 5.5 TFL (1 sack), 3 passes defended, recovered 2 fumbles and forced 1. In 2008 he started 12 games (13 overall) and had 56 tackles, 2 TFL (1 sack), 3 interceptions, and defended 4 passes that year.

Louis Gachette – 6’3” 215 lbs. – Immokalee, FL (Immokalee HS)

Gachette played in 12 games in 2005 and had 16 tackles with 2 interceptions. In 2006 he played in 13 games and had 14 tackles with 1 sack and 1 interception. In 2007 he played in 11 games and had 23 tackles and 2 interceptions. In 2008 he started 2 games (13 overall) and had 37 tackles with 1 TFL.

Jeremy Burnett – 6’1” 190 lbs. – Tampa, FL (Jefferson HS) (Purdue)

In 2005 he played in 12 games and had 4 tackles. In 2006 he started 12 games and 71 tackles, 3.5 TFL, 2 interceptions, and defended 6 passes (played just 2 years because he was a transfer).

Danny Verpaele – 5’11” 207 lbs. – Merritt Island, FL (Merritt Island HS)

In 2004, he started 7 games (11 overall) and had 54 tackles with 4 TFL (2 sacks). After a redshirt in 2005, he started 6 games in 2006 (13 overall) and had 34 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 interception and defended 7 passes. He did not play in 2007 but returned in 2008 to started 3 games (7 overall) and had 17 tackles, 1 TFL, and defended 1 pass in his final year.

Johnnie Jones – 6’3” 215 lbs. – Sarasota, FL (Booker HS)

Jones played in 11 games in 2001 and had 5 tackles (1 TFL). In 2002 he played in 11 games again, totaling 18 tackles. In 2003 he played in 11 games and had 40 tackles with 3 sacks. In 2004 he started 2 games (had 5 tackles) but his year ended due to a neck injury. In 2005 he started 12 games and had 57 tackles, 3 TFL, 2 interceptions and defended 4 passes.

D’Juan Brown – 5’11” 175 lbs. – Belle Glade, FL (Glades Central HS)

Brown played one year at safety in 2004 and started 3 games, totaling 27 tackles with 4 PBUs. He missed the rest of the year due to a broken arm suffered that season.

Drametrice Smith – 6’ 210 lbs. – Ft. Lauderdale, FL (St. Thomas Aquinas)

Smith played 1 game in 2004 (5 overall) and had 5 tackles in his very limited time.

Antonio Warren – 6’1” 190 lbs. – Miami, FL (North Miami FL)

Warren played in 7 games in 2001 and had 3 tackles with 2 PBUs. In 2002 he played in 11 games and had 3 tackles. In 2003 he played in 8 games and had 5 tackles. In 2004 he started 1 game (11 overall) and had 13 total tackles that year.

Javon Camon – 6’2” 185 lbs. – Port Charlotte, FL (Port Charlotte HS)

Camon played in 11 games in 2001 and had 28 tackles, 2 PBUs, and forced a fumble. In 2002 he started 1 game (11 overall) and had 27 tackles with 1 TFL. In 2003 he played in 11 games and had 18 tackles with 1 TFL and recovered a fumble. In 2004 he started 8 games (11 overall) and had 101 tackles, 5 TFL, 4 PBUs and forced a fumble in his final season with USF.

Kevin Verpaele – 6’ 195 lbs. – Merritt Island, FL (Merritt Island HS)

Verpaele played in 11 games in 2000 and had 5 tackles with 1 TFL. In 2001 he played in 11 games and had 42 tackles, 4 TFL, and recovered a fumble. In 2002 he started 11 games and had 84 tackles, 8 TFL, 3 interceptions, 4 PBus, forced 4 fumbles and recovered 2 fumbles. In 2003 he started 11 games and had 87 tackles, 5 TFL (.5 sack), 1 interception, 4 passes defended, forced 3 fumbles and recovered 3 fumbles as well.

JR Reed – 5’11” 200 lbs. – Tampa, FL (Hillsborough HS)

One of the greatest of all time. Reed played in 11 games in 2000 and had 7 tackles with 3 PBUs. In 2001 he started 11 games and had 89 tackles, 2 TFL, 5 interceptions, 11 PBUs, forced 2 fumbles and recovered 3 . In 2002 he started 10 games (11) and had 95 tackles, 3 TFL (1 sack), 6 interceptions, and 7 PBUs that year. In 2003 he started 11 games and had 102 tackles, 3 TFL, 7 interceptions, 6 PBUs, forced a fumble and recovered 2 fumbles. He needs to be on the ultimate team, folks.

Joe Morgan – 5’10” 185 lbs. – Miami, FL (American HS)

Morgan played in 10 games in 1999 and had 7 tackles. In 2000 he started 7 games (11 games) and had 55 tackles, 3 TFL (1.5 sacks), 1 PBU and recovered a fumble. In 2001 he started 11 games, he recorded 76 tackles, 6 TFL (2 sacks), 1 interception, 8 PBUs, and forced a fumble in his final season.

Roy Manns – 5’11” 170 lbs. – Clearwater, FL (East Lake HS)

In 1997 he played in 11 games and had 54 tackles, 4 TFL, 5 interceptions, 4 PBUs, and recovered a fumble. In 1998 he played in 10 games and had 90 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 interception and 2 PBUs. In 1999 he started 11 games and had 97 tackles, 8 TFL (1 sack), 1 interception, 8 PBUs, and forced 3 fumbles. In 2000 he started 11 games and had 76 tackles, 3 TFL, 1 interception, 6 PBUs, and recovered 2 fumbles.

Jay Mize – 5’11” 185 lbs. – Palm Harbor, FL (East Lake HS)

Mize played in 11 games in 1997 and totaled 17 tackles with 1 TFL and 1 PBU. In 1998 he played in 11 games and had 26 tackles, 3 TFL, and 1 interception. In 1999 he started 3 games (8 games) and had 49 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 PBU, and recovered a fumble. In 2000 he started 4 games and had 35 tackles with 1 TFL and had 1 PBU.

Anthony Henry – 6’2” 200 lbs. – Ft. Myers, FL (Estero HS)

Henry recorded 73 tackles in 2997 along with 2 TFL, 2 interceptions, 3 PBUs and recovered 2 fumbles. In 1998 he started 11 games and had 79 tackles with 6 PBUs and recovered a fumble. In 1999 he started 8 games (9 overall) and had 62 tackles, 1 TFL, 3 interceptions, forced a fumble and recovered 2 more. He moved over to corner in the 2000 season. He is one of the greatest.

Edwin Greene – 5’11” 170 lbs. – Miami, FL (Southridge HS)

Greene played in 1 game in 1998 (3 overall) and had 4 tackles with 1 PBU.
