The Bulls, 7-3, fell to the 8th ranked Mississippi State in a tough match of two ranked teams. USF made it closer in the second half, but just did not have enough in the tank to pull off the upset victory.
USF shot 37% for the game while the Bulldogs shot 43% from the field. The two sides were even in rebounding at 35 apiece, but the Bulls did have 24 turnovers in the game, allowing for 25 points for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs were tough defensively and took it right at the Bulls. There were some tough calls, some that Coach Fernandez did not appreciate (got a technical foul in the first half). I will leave it at that.
Courtney Williams had 12 points (4 for 20 shooting) on a rough day from the field, adding 6 rebounds as well. Alisia Jenkins had 15 points and 12 rebounds. Katelyn Weber had 5 points and 2 blocks in the start. Laura Ferreira had 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals (helped pull the Bulls closer in the second half). USF just did not have enough on offense in this game against the rugged MSU defense.
The Bulls will hit the road as they take on ECU on Saturday (game begins at 1 PM) to begin AAC play. Hopefully the Bulls can learn from this tough loss to a top 10 ranked foe, become stronger from it, and take out their anger on ECU. They can’t dwell on this one too long.
