The Bulls, 1-0, continue to defend the Sun Dome as they host Drexel (1-0), in the second game of the preseason WNIT (game begins at 4 PM). USF looked impressive in their opening win but have a lot of areas to clean up moving into this second game.
Drexel went 20-11 (8-5 away) last year, averaging 57 PPG and allowing 55 PPG. They won their season opener 67 to 53 over Dartmouth to open their season on Friday night.
Leading Drexel is junior forward is Sarah Curran (5’11”) who averaged 12.1 PPG last year along with 4.4 RPG and totaled 41 steals and 8 blocks. She scored 20 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals in their opening win. Senior guard Rachel Pearson (5’11”) averaged 11.6 PPG (was 77 for 200 from 3-point range) with 3.9 RPG, 2.1 APG, and had 39 steals. She had 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists in their opening win. With her size, she will make for an interesting match-up for Courtney Williams on the wing. Senior graduate forward Jackie Schluth (6’1″) averaged 8 PPG, 4.5 RPG and totaled 36 steals and 25 blocks last year. She had 8 points, 12 rebounds and 3 blocks in their opening game (tough post player to deal with in the paint for USF). Redshirt junior guard Meghan Creighton (5’7″) averaged 6.6 PPG, 4.1 RPG, 5.9 APG, and had 8 steals in 6 games last year. She totaled 5 points, 2 rebounds, 8 assists (1 turnover) and a steal in the opening win and runs the offense for Drexel.
USF had big offensive games from their stars in the opening win. Courtney Williams went off for 34 points and 18 rebounds while freshman Kitija Laska had 15 points. It was fun, but the team turned the ball over 17 times and has to do a better job controlling the ball and hitting their free throws when they get the opportunities. I would expect a very focused effort from the Bulls in this game and for them to come out and take care of business.
