The Bulls, 1-0, started the season off with a solid victory, beating Jacksonville 74 to 52. The Bulls led from start to finish and despite a slight run from the Dolphins in the third to get it within 8 points, it would not be enough as the 20th ranked Bulls ran away late with the game.
USF shot 46% for the game while they held Jacksonville to 27% for the game. USF was just 5 for 20 from 3-point range (25%) and 11 for 20 from the free throw line (55%) so the Bulls, despite the big win, have work to do moving forward. USF outrebounded Jacksonville 51 to 38 for the game. The Bulls also had 17 assists to 17 turnovers, again, showing they have work to do despite the victory.
Courtney Williams led the way for USF with 34 points, shooting 14 for 38 from the field, and added 18 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals in a monster start for her to the year. Alisia Jenkins had 8 points and 7 rebounds before fouling out in the second half of the game. She joined the 1000 point and 1000 rebound club after her performance. Kitija Laksa had 15 points (2 for 8 from 3-point range) in a solid freshman debut for her. Laura Ferreira had 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. Laia Flores (got the start) and had 4 assists (2 turnovers) and had 1 steal. Shalethia Stringfield had 5 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in the game.
This was a great way to start the year and for the pre-season WNIT tournament. USF will face either Drexel or Dartmouth on Sunday. The time for the game has yet to be determined.
