USF overcame a big first half deficit to win their AAC opener over ECU, 69 to 62. The Bulls, 10-3 (1-0) were down by 10 during the first half but were able to come back and hold on down the stretch to get the first conference win of the year. This was a very important game.
It was an ugly game for the Bulls to start in this game as they showed rust. USF shot just 30% for the first half, but they turned it around in the 2nd half. USF was able to out-shoot ECU 44% to 27% for the game overall. USF was also 24 for 34 in free throw attempts, taking advantage of the fouls the Pirates committed throughout the game. USF did commit 26 turnovers to just 17 for ECU, something they have to clean up, but despite the bad number there, the victory at the end of the day makes up for it.
Courtney Williams led the way with 18 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists (7 turnovers), 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Alisia Jenkins had 12 points, 13 rebounds and a huge 8 blocks as she dominated the paint. Maria Jespersen had 11 points and 5 rebounds. Laura Ferreira had 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Shalethia Stringfield had 11 points, all coming from the free throw line (11 for 12) and added 3 assists and 6 rebounds as well to help the Bulls secure their first AAC win of the year.
USF will host Memphis on Wednesday at 3 PM as they try to go to 2-0 in AAC play before the 2015 calendar year comes. Great win today for the ladies!
