Reviewing the units: Wide receivers and tight ends

Posted: December 18, 2014 in Football

The skill players for USF had an up and down year. It was a historic and record breaking one for Andre Davis, but it was a somewhat disappointing year for others. The passing game struggled and the numbers for the receivers reflected it with the issues the offense had at quarterback. Let’s review the preseason grade and review how each player did during the year.

Preseason grade: B

The grade was high for the unit entering the year. With Mike McFarland and Sean Price returning at tight end, the unit was strong. Andre Davis returned for his final year and had Rodney Adams joining him on the perimeter, adding more speed to create vertical threats down the field. The unit looked good with the incoming recruiting class, but everything required the play of the quarterback to improve for them to be successful. With that, let’s see how the unit did this year.

Tight ends

#48 Spencer Adkinson – 6’2″ 237 lbs. – Redshirt freshman – No stats this year

#41 Jake Carlton – 6’3″ 240 lbs. – Senior – No stats this year

#85 Elkanah Dillon – 6’5″ 239 lbs. – Freshman – No stats this year

#89 Guito Ervilus – 6’4″ 246 lbs. – Sophomore – No stats this year

#80 Mike McFarland – 6’5″ 242 lbs. – Senior – 27 receptions for 315 yards

#12 Sean Price – 6’3″ 250 lbs. – Junior – 14 receptions for 207 yards.

Wide receivers

#87 Rodney Adams – 6’1″ 190 lbs. – Sophomore  – 23 receptions for 323 yards, 2 touchdowns; 5 carries for 53 yards and 1 touchdown

#88 Austin Aikens – 6′ 180 lbs. – Sophomore – No stats this year

#15 Zach Benjamin – 6’4″ 195 lbs. – Redshirt freshman – No stats this year

#81 Ryeshene Bronson – 6’3″ 187 lbs. – 3 receptions for 85 yards, 1 touchdown

#86 Stanley Clerveaux – 6’3″ 196 lbs. – Freshman – No stats this year

#7 Andre Davis – 6’1″ 205 lbs. – Senior – 36 receptions for 594 yards, 7 touchdowns

#19 Eric Dungy – 6’1″ 190 lbs. – Junior – 1 reception for 7 yards

#17 Tommy Eveld – 6’5″ 194 lbs. – Sophomore – No stats this year

#25 Clinton Jones – 5’9″ 160 lbs. – Senior – No stats this year

#6 AJ Legree – 6’1″ 194 lbs. – Junior – No stats this year, transfer from Kentucky

#8 Tyre McCants – 5’11” 211 lbs. – Freshman – No stats this year

#84 Alex Mut – 6’3″ 205 lbs. – Sophomore – No stats this year

#83 Deonte Welch – 6′ 215 lbs. – Senior – 23 receptions for 269 yards

#26 Chase Whitehead – 5’9″ 170 lbs. – Freshman – No stats this year

Both Price and McFarland had decent seasons, but McFarland did have issues with some drops during the year. Andre Davis was the most reliable target, but he missed several games during the year both to injury and a suspension late in the year. Davis did set more program records, but he could have set even more if he had been healthy at the start of the year. Deonte Welch was serviceable and Rodney Adams showed flashes, but he was hurt late in the year. We saw a little bit of Ryeshene Bronson this year, but not much else from the freshmen class this year. Overall, the unit didn’t have the numbers we thought they would but it all depended on the quarterback play for the Bulls, which wasn’t that great in 2014.

Grade: B-

The grade for the receivers drops for me at the end of the year. Yes, their numbers were low across the board thanks to bad quarterback play during the season, but the receivers had issues as well during the year that contribute to the slight grade drop. Andre Davis missed time with an injury but also missed time for a suspension during the year. McFarland had issues with catching the ball during time during the year. Bronson had one moment then disappeared from action. Rodney Adams had moments, but was hurt late. The unit just seemed in and out during the year and bad quarterback play didn’t help get the ball out to them. It just wasn’t a great year for the passing game and there are a lot of reasons that go into it. I think the grade is fair. The unit will have to improve in the offseason but having a solid starting quarterback would be a great start.
