USF WBB takes on UNC Asheville in home opener

Posted: November 22, 2014 in Basketball

After 3 games on the road, the Bulls (2-1) are finally home as they open up the Sun Dome slate of their games against UNC Asheville (0-2 on the year). The Bulldogs went 11-20 last year including 3-10 away from home. They averaged just 60 points per game and allowed 67 per game (game begins at 2 PM).

The Bulldogs are led by junior Paige Love (5’8″) who is averaging 10.5 PPG, 4.5 RPG on the year and has added 6 assists and 2 steals on the year. She averaged 9.3 PPG and 5.2 RPG last year. Senior guard Shonese Jones (5’2″) is averaging 7.5 PPG and has 2 steals in the first two games. She was the leading scorer last year for UNC Asheville with 10.4 PPG and 2.5 RPG. USF will have to make sure she doesn’t get going in this game. Sophomore forward KJ Weaver (6’1″) is averaging 5 PPG and 6.5 RPG. She averaged 4.1 PPG and 4.7 RPG. Sophomore guard Tianna Knuckles (5’10” and an awesome name) is averaging 12 PPG and 5 RPG a game this year coming off of the bench. She averaged 9.5 PPG and 3.9 RPG last year and gives the Bulldogs a taller guard in the backcourt the Bulls will have to contend with. Senior forward Jeannie Buckner (6′) is averaging 3 PPG, 4.5 RPG and has 2 steals on the year. She averaged 3.8 PPG and 4.7 RPG last year.

The Bulls should have a size advantage in this game. With Alisia Jenkins, Katelyn Weber (still nursing a toe injury) and Paige Cashin on the front court and players like Ariadna Pujol and Laura Ferreria on the perimeter with height, the Bulls should be able to take advantage inside the paint in this game. Look for Courtney Williams to take over this game as well and lead the charge as the Bulls try to get back to their winning ways. As long as USF stays out of foul trouble in the paint and gets the points from their stars, they should take care of this game.
