After a strong opening weekend to begin the year, the Bulls (2-0), are back on the road as they face 10/8 ranked Maryland in College Park (game begins at 7 PM). The Terrapins are 2-0 on the year as well and defeated their first two opponents by a combined score of 206 to 69. This is going to be a real tough test for the Bulls in the early part of the year.
Maryland is led by sophomore guard Lexie Brown (5’9″) who has averaged 12.5 PPG, 1.5 RPG in the first two games and has 7 assists and 6 steals. She averaged 10.1 PPG and 1.9 RPG last season. Junior forward Malina Howard (6’4″) is averaging 10 PPG, 5 RPG and has 7 assists, 4 steals, and 3 rebounds in the first two wins. She averaged just 4.2 PPG and 2.3 RPG last year, so she is off to a strong start this year in more of a starting roll. Sophomore center Brionna Jones (6’3″) is averaging 10 PPG, 7.5 RPG and has 4 blocks and 4 steals on the year. She averaged 6.9 PPG and 4.5 RPG last year. Freshman guard Kiara Leslie (6′) is averaging 13.5 PPG, 8.5 RPG and has 2 blocks and 2 steals on the year. She is a talented freshman guard with size that is off to a hot start. Junior forward Tierney Pfirman (6’2″) is averaging 13 PPG and 4 RPG on the year with 2 steals. She averaged 5.1 PPG and 3.7 RPG last year. Maryland is off to a hot start as expected, rotating in several young players into their lineup. They are a talented group and deep with talent on their bench.
For the Bulls to pull the upset, they need their stars, Courtney Williams and Alisia Jenkins, to go off in this game. They have been solid in the first two two wins, but they have both been real close. USF has to get their stars going and get the others playing at higher levels. USF is still working on the point guard position, rotating several players in. They need whoever gets the start their to take over and cut down on turnovers, setting up Williams and Jenkins for success. This is going to be a real tough game.
