The Bulls won in dramatic fashion today to start the year, winning 57 to 56 over Villanova to start the year 1-0. USF led 32 to 27 at the half, but the Wildcats went on a 10-0 run to start the 2nd half to take over early in the 2nd period. However, the Bulls were able to rally late and hold onto a thrilling win over a very tough opponent.
Alisia Jenkins had 11 points and 13 rebounds in a big game for her to start the year. Courtney Williams had 21 points (9 for 25 shooting) and added 10 rebounds. Laura Ferreira, getting the start, had 7 points and 4 rebounds. Maria Jespersen had 4 points and 7 rebounds as she got the start as well. Laura Marcos Canedo had 2 points and added 2 assists as well. Overall it was a solid game for the Bulls. They shot just 35% from the field as a group but it was expected against a very tough defensive foe in Villanova. They out-rebounded the Wildcats 49 to 36 in this game, cleaning up the boards well. The shooting will come and the team is rolling with a lot of young players, so the growing pains are expected. At the end, they got the win and are moving on.
USF will take on UTC tomorrow (1-0) at 2 PM as they try to start the year at 2-0 against the host tournament team.
