USF volleyball takes on SMU

The Bulls, 11-15 (5-9), are back home to take on SMU on alumni night (game begins at 7 PM). SMU is 21-5 (10-4) on the year but are 5-4 away from home (have a current 5-game winning streak). They beat the Bulls in 3 straight sets back in September, something the Bulls would like to avenge back on their home court.

SMU is led by junior outside hitter Abby Bybel. Bybel has 290 kills, 27 service aces, and 252 digs on the year. She had 4 kills and 4 digs in the first meeting. Sophomore middle blocker Janelle Giordano has 216 kills, 34 digs, and leads the team with 122 blocks. She had 6 kills in the first game. Senior outside hitter Caroline Young has 293 kills on the year with 36 service aces and 191 digs. She led the Mustangs with 12 kills and 11 digs in the first game. Sophomore libero Morgan Heise has 84 assists and 489 digs on the year (center of their defense). She had 11 digs and 4 assists in the first meeting. Junior setter Avery Acker has 52 kills, 1135 assists, and 318 digs on the year (big time setter for their offense). She had 38 assists and 8 digs in the first game.

For the Bulls to pull the upset win here, they will need another monster game from Erin Fairs. She had 14 kills and 15 digs in the first meeting, but it wasn’t enough. Bree Scarbrough had 12 kills to back her up, but her and Fairs will need more help from the rest of the team. Everyone will have to step up their game if USF wants to get the upset.
