USF MBB takes on Flagler College to start 2014-15 season

Time to get this season started.

Time for the start of the 2014-15 regular season. USF will be facing off against Flagler College (DII program) in the first meeting between the two programs. The Saints faced UCF in exhibition play to start their season (exhibition game for them). USF beat IUP in their first game 77 to 72 in their exhibition game to get tuned up for the start of the regular season.

Flagler went 11-15 last season and were 1-10 away from home. The Saints averaged 76.9 PPG while allowing 76.3 PPG last year. They dropped their exhibition game against UCF 70 to 96. Game begins at 7 PM.

The Saints are led by senior guard Jerrell Oxendine (5’10” 160 lbs.) who started 14 games last year (played in all 26) and averaged 11.8 PPG (shot 41 for 113 from 3-point range) while adding 2.3 RPG, 2.1 APG, and 16 steals last year. He had 24 points and 3 rebounds in their exhibition game to start the year. Senior guard Dennis Diaz (6’3″ 185 lbs.) started 22 games last year and averaged 11.4 PPG (shot 47 for 127 from 3-point range) while adding 3.1 RPG and 15 steals last season. He had 5 points and 3 rebounds in their exhibition game. He gives Flagler a little more height in the backcourt, which could pose a problem for the shorter USF guards like Anthony Collins and Corey Allen. Collins and Allen looked solid in the exhibition win over IUP and they will have to control the tempo in this game and keep control of the pace.

Senior guard Lydell Manigo (6’2″ 193 lbs.) averaged 7.5 PPG last year (made 14 starts) and added 3.1 RPG and 18 steals. He had 8 points and 7 rebounds in their exhibition game. Senior forward Desmond Gibson (6’7″ 185 lbs.) averaged 4.4 PPG, 4.8 RPG, and had a team high 36 blocks in 15 starts. USF struggled a bit in the paint in the exhibition game over IUP without Chris Perry (knee) and Ruben Guerrero (groin) who were both held out for the game. USF will need them both back in the lineup to help add depth and size in the paint. If they can’t go, it could be an issue with depth in the paint. Jaleel Cousins will have to be real careful with foul trouble.

This will be a real interesting first game of the year for the Bulls. Flagler likes to run and keep the tempo up, just like the Bulls like to do. This could be a high scoring game if both teams are hitting their shots. Let’s see how the Bulls do when the game truly matters.
