Meet the SMU coaching staff

Posted: November 10, 2014 in Football

The SMU coaching staff is working under an interim head coach after veteran June Jones resigned just 2 games into the season. Since then, Tom Mason the defensive coordinator, has taken over the calling duties as the interim coach. It hasn’t been easy for him or his staff since Jones left. Here is more about his background and the other coordinators.

Interim Head Coach/Defensive coordinator Tom Mason – Mason is in his 7th season at SMU and is now the interim head coach June Jones resigned from the program months ago. Coach Mason has coached solid defenses in the past, fielding units that were known for their speed and pursuit of the ball carrier. They have struggled this year both in rush and pass defense, showing the strain of becoming the interim coach has had on Mason during the season. Before he took over at SMU, he spent 7 years at Fresno State coaching the linebackers. Coach Mason knows both the 3-4 and 4-3 looks on defense and will try to bring multiple fronts and packages against the USF defense. With the quarterback spot open for the Bulls, this could be an issue.

Co-Offensive coordinator/Associate Head Coach/WR coach Dan Morrison – Coach Morrison is also entering his 7th year at SMU. Morrison has a long history with the run and gun offense and has coached up the wide receivers for years at SMU. Before he took over at SMU, Morrison spent 9 years as the QB coach out at Hawaii under Coach Jones, learning his spread system and how it operates. His offense has struggled during the year to find consistency, but with mobile quarterback Matt Davis now in control, the offense might be able to have more success.

Co-Offensive coordinator/Assistant head coach/WR coach Jason Phillips – Coach Phillips is entering his third year with SMU and has a long history with spread offenses. Before he came to SMU, Coach Phillips spent 9 years at Houston as their wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator. Coach Phillips has a long history with spread systems and with his background in Texas, he is a top recruiter for them. Look for Coach Phillips, working with Coach Morrison, to have his offense ready for this game and ready to spread out the USF defense. Quarterback Matt Davis might be the spark they have been looking for all year.
