USF Volleyball takes on San Diego in 2nd day of Mortar Board Premier

Posted: August 30, 2014 in Volleyball

After facing LSU and Purdue in the first two games of the Mortar Board Premier, the Bulls will take on San Diego in game three (USF enters with an 0-2 record). San Diego (faces Purdue and LSU before this game) went 26-4 last season and made it to the NCAA Sweet 16, providing the Bulls with another tournament team to start the season (game begins at 4 PM).

The Toreros, which is Spanish for Bull Fighters (perfect for this game, right?) return 9 players from last year’s team but will have to 3 replace 3 of their 5 best offensive players from the front line. However, despite the missing experience, they do return a very balanced squad.

San Diego is led by senior middle hitter/outside hitter Alaysia Brown. Brown totaled 322 kills last year along with 67 blocks and 40 digs. She’ll be a key player at the net against the Bulls defense. Senior outside hitter Sandra Lozic totaled 301 kills last year along with 12 assists, 14 service aces, and 258 digs. She is a very active player that will move around a lot to both sides of the floor. Senior setter Jianna Bonomi had 804 assists, 20 service aces, and 275 digs. She is a key to the Toreros offensive attack. Sophomore libero Hunter Jennings totaled 20 assists, 20 service aces, and had 180 digs last year. Look for her to have an even bigger part on defense for San Diego in this game.

This is another tough, early season test for the Bulls as they begin the year on the road against tough NCAA tournament caliber teams. Hopefully Erin Fairs and Coach Draper can come through with a big win.
