USF WSoccer takes on Navy

The ladies are still looking for their first win and first goal of the 2014 season.

The Bulls return home to Corbett Field, looking for their first win and the first goal of the 2014 season. USF fell 2-0 to Florida on Sunday afternoon. The game had a 2.5 hour rain delay in the middle, making for a long and tough loss on the road (game is scheduled for 7:30 PM). Navy enters the game with a 0-2 record as well, falling 2 to 1 to Uconn in their last outing. Navy went 16-5-0 last year, showing they are a strong team that is just off to a slow start.

Navy is led by senior forward Morgan Dankanich who has their only goal on the year on 3 shots. Dankanich led the team last year with 14 goals and 3 assists and will be a key player for the Bulls to shut down. Senior defender Julie Schumacher has 1 assist on the year and totaled 6 last year. Sophomore midfielder Rachel Feldman has recorded 8 shots on the year (no shots last year) showing her aggressive style to start the season. For the USF defense, it will come down to supporting the young goal keepers. In the first game, USF went with freshman Thordis Aikman. She allowed 1 goal but made 4 saves. In the game against UF, she was pulled after just 10 minutes and was replaced by fellow freshman Katarina Elliott, who made 4 saves and allowed 2 goals while playing the remaining 79 minutes of that game. It will be interesting to see who the Bulls go with in net and how they handle the situation as they continue to find their goal keeper.

Opposing the Bulls in the opposite net is Dayton Wetherby who has allowed 3 goals in two games while making 11 saves (.786). The Bulls have yet to score a goal all season long. They managed 13 shots vs. FAU but had just 3 total in the UF game. The Gators dominated possession, something that USF is known for. I would imagine the Bulls will be picking up the pace in this game and pressuring the Navy backline consistently. Olivia Chance, Demi Stokes, and others are far too talented to be this quiet to start the year. I would expect to hear their names called a lot in this game and hopefully they will be able to break out.
