Per AP Report: 5 Western Carolina Players Suspended for Opening Game vs. USF

Posted: August 23, 2014 in Football

Per the AP Report – The report from the AP is stating that 5 players of the Western Carolina football team will not make the trip to Tampa to play the Bulls in the season opener. Defensive back Bryson Jordan, defensive linemen Fred Mooring and Tahjai Watt, and wide receivers Seth Curtis and Karnorris Benson, are all suspended. The first 4 are still eligible per NCAA standards, but they did not meet the Western Carolina Athletic Department standards. Benson, is suspended for 2 games due to “NCAA academic eligibility requirements stemming from the 2013 fall semester” per the AP’s report.

Bryson Jordan started all 12 games last year for the Catamounts. He had 53 tackles, 2 TFL, and 2 PBU. Defensive linemen Fred Mooring appeared in 11 games and made 1 start, totaling 19 tackles, including 2.5 TFL and 1 sack.  Tahjai Watt did not record any stats. Wide receiver Seth Curtis had 2 receptions for 34 yards. The big loss for the Catamounts (along with Jordan) is Karnorris Benson who led the team with 51 receptions for 834 yards and led the team with 12 touchdowns.

This is pretty big news with Benson and Jordan being out. They are two starting players with Benson being the number one wide receiver option for Western Carolina. Watt and Mooring are depth as well on the defensive line hurting the depth the Catamounts will be able to field in the game.
