In Mike White we trust

So the news was broken last night that sophomore quarterback Mike White will be the starter entering the 2014 season opener against Western Carolina. White had been battling Steven Bench since the end of last year for the starting job and both took snaps with the first team offense throughout all the practices.

White threw just 3 touchdowns compared to 9 interceptions last year, but he was truly in a no-win situation with the offense around him. White was thrown into the fire as a true freshman. He had a bad offensive line, an offensive unit that was still trying to learn the offense while on the job, and a perfect storm for a bad year. White showed flashes at times but made the freshmen mistakes that were expected and had a system that was not set up for success in his first year.

I personally believe White can get the job done this year and moving forward. He has a good arm, can deliver the long throws with touch, and has a command of the huddle. He isn’t as mobile as Bench but he doesn’t have to be. He just has to be able to move in the pocket and not make mistakes. While the 9 interceptions were bad last year, having to throw down the field when the team was trailing in every game was even worse, leading to the bad numbers. I think White will have a solid season, throw for around 2000 yards (just an estimate) and should turn the touchdown/interception ratio around in his second season. Let’s hope it all works out in the end.
