USF baseball heads to the AAC tournament

The Bulls, 26-29 (10-14) are the number five seed heading into the AAC tournament over in Clearwater. USF is part of Pool A and will play three games to decide who will play in the AAC championship game against the winner of Pool B. Here are the scouting reports on all three teams USF will face including Rutgers (Wednesday at 7 PM), Louisville (Friday at 3 PM), and Memphis (Saturday at 7 PM).

This tournament will also be the last few games for Coach Lelo Prado who will be taking a new job at the end of the season. After the tournament is over, Prado will become the associate director of athletics for administration and external services. The Bulls are hoping to send Prado out with a few more wins before that happens.

Rutgers

USF will first face Rutgers, 29-23 (14-9) the number 4 seed in the tournament. Rutgers swept USF 3-0 during the regular season.

The Scarlet Knights are led by senior short stop Pat Sweeney who is batting .342 on the year with 11 doubles, 3 triples, 1 home run and has 25 RBIs on the season. Senior infielder Brian O’Grady is batting .333 with 11 doubles, 5 triples, 4 home runs, 28 RBIs and is 13 for 18 in steal attempts. Freshman outfielder Mike Carter is batting .323 with 10 doubles, 3 triples, and has 33 RBIs on the year. Junior outfielder Vinny Zarrillo is batting .306 with 11 doubles, 1 home run, and leads the team with 38 RBIs to round out their batting order.

On the mound (4.53 ERA as a team), the Scarlet Knights are led by freshman RHP Gaby Rosa who is 6-2 on the year with a 2.28 ERA (Bulls faced him before). He has thrown 71 innings, allowing 57 hits, 28 runs, 18 walks and has struck out 29 batters. Sophomore LHP is 5-3 with a 2.68 ERA on the year. He has worked 69.1 innings, allowing 53 hits, 22 runs, 26 walks, and has struck out 36 batters on the year. In the bullpen, redshirt freshman LHP is Max Herrmann who is 3-0 with 2 saves and a 2.29 ERA. He has worked 39.1 innings, allowing 35 hits, 15 runs, 16 walks, and has struck out 39 batters. Junior RHP Jon Young is 2-4 with 9 saves and has a 4.72 ERA. He has worked 34.1 innings, allowing 52 hits, 28 runs, 10 walks and has struck out 20 batters to round out their pitching staff.

Louisville

Louisville, 43-13 (19-5), is the number 1 seed in the tournament. They swept the Bulls (3-0) in the regular season, one game going to 11 innings.

The Cardinals are led by senior outfielder Jeff Gardner who is batting .340 with 19 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs, and leads the team with 61 RBIs. Senior outfielder Cole Sturgeon is batting .319 with 15 doubles, 6 triples, 2 home runs, 28 RBIs, and is 17 out of 22 in steal attempts. Senior infielder Alex Chittenden is batting .308 with 9 doubles, a home run, and 22 RBIs. Junior infielder Grant Kay is batting .284 with 9 doubles, 5 home runs, 35 RBIs and leads the team with 21 steals in 23 attempts.

On the mound, the Cardinals are led by sophomore RHP Kyle Funkhouser who is 11-2 with a 1.74 ERA. He has worked 93 innings, allowing 66 hits, 23 runs, 51 walks, and has struck out 92 batters. Junior RHP Jared Ruxer is 7-1 with a 2.27 ERA. He has worked 75 innings, allowing 61 hits, 23 runs, 16 walks and has struck out 68 batters. Junior RHP Nick Burdi is 3-1 with 14 saves and has a .58 ERA. He has thrown 31 innings, allowing 15 hits, 4 runs, 8 walks, and has struck out 54 batters. Junior LHP Kyle McGrath is 1-1 with a 1.16 ERA. He has worked 31 innings, allowing 18 hits, 4 runs, 8 walks, and has truck out 34 batters.

Memphis

Memphis, the 8 seed, is 28-28 (8-16) on the year. USF won the regular season series, going 2-1 against the Tigers.

At the plate, Memphis is led by junior outfielder Kane Barrow who is batting .330 with 10 doubles, 3 home runs, and has 27 RBIs on the season. Sophomore infielder Jake Little is batting .307 with 9 doubles, 5 home runs, 33 RBIs and is 14 for 19 in steal attempts. Junior catcher/1st baseman Carter White is batting .294 with 7 doubles, 2 home runs, and has 35 RBIs on the season. Junior infielder Tucker Tubbs is batting .247 with 3 home runs and 33 RBIs to round out their batting order.

On the mound, Memphis is led by senior RHP Jon Reed who is 7-3 on the year with a 3.45 ERA. He has worked 91.1 innings, allowing 83 hits, 46 runs, 28 walks, and has struck out 57 batters on the year. Junior LHP Caleb Wallingford is 6-4 with a 1.87 ERA. He has thrown 86.2 innings, allowing 72 hits, 28 runs, 21 walks, and has struck out 70 batters. Junior RHP Bryce Beeler is 2-2 with 8 saves and a 4.61 ERA. He has worked 27.1 innings, allowing 27 hits, 16 runs, 9 walks, and has struck out 34 batters. Freshman RHP Nolan Blackwood is 2-2 with 3 saves. He has worked 41 innings, allowing 38 hits, 19 runs, 10 walks, and has struck out 27 batters.

Let’s see what the Bulls have left in the tank.
