USF baseball falls in first game to Rutgers

The Bulls fell 3 to 1 to Rutgers in the first game of the three game series. The loss drops the Bulls to 25-25 (10-12). Jimmy Herget wasn’t at his best and the offense failed to get anything going with just 4 total hits on the day.

Rutgers scored first in the first inning after Mike Carter started the game with a single, he later came home on a passed ball, making it 1 to 0. The Bulls had the bases loaded in the third inning with Nik Alfonso, Austin Lueck, and Kyle Teaf all on board, but Luke Borders would fly out to end the threat. In the bottom of the inning, Rutgers would add more. Nick Favatella walked to start the inning and later came home on an RBI single from Pat Sweeney, making it 2 to 0 RU. In the 6th, Rutgers would add another run after Tom Marcinczyk singled, he would score on a RJ Devish single. USF would get their one run in the 7th after Andres Leal hit a single and Levi Borders hit a double. Zac Gilcrease would ground out, scoring Leal and giving the Bulls their only run.

Jimmy Herget struggled, working just 5 innings, allowing 9 hits 3 runs, 2 walks, and struck out 4 batters. Lawrence Pardo was sharp in relief, working the final 3 innings, walking 1, allowing a hit and striking out 4 batters.

USF will try to avoid a losing AAC season tomorrow in the second game, game begins at 1 PM.
