USF baseball falls on senior as Louisville completes their sweep

Posted: May 4, 2014 in Baseball

Coach Prado was tossed early as the Bulls were swept by Louisville.

The Bulls let an early lead get away and couldn’t rally late as the Louisville Cardinals completed the sweep of the Bulls, winning 9 to 5. The loss puts USF at 24-23 (10-11) on the season as they continue to slide late in the season.

The Bulls would score 4 runs in the bottom of the second. Lawrence Pardo started it with a walk, followed by a single from Andres Leal and a Zac Gilcrease walk. Nik Alfonso would single home Leal and Pardo. After that, Austin Lueck would single home Gilcrease and Luke Borders would reach on a fielder’s choice, allowing Alfonso to score. The Cardinals would come back in the 4th inning, scoring 4 runs of their own to tie it up. In the 7th, the Cardinals would add 3 more runs, making it 7 to 4. In the bottom of the inning, USF got one back after Levi Borders doubled and Lawrence Pardo reached on an error, making it 7 to 5. However, in the 9th, the Cardinals added two more and put the game out of reach, winning it 9 to 5.

Tommy Peterson went 4 innings, allowing 3 hits, 4 runs, 1 walk and struck out 4 batters. Cody Hernandez worked 2.2 innings, allowing just 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 1 batter as he continues to throw well. Nolan Thomas went two thirds of an inning and struck out one batter. Brandon Lawson went just two thirds, allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and struck out one batter as Louisville took the lead in the 8th for good. In the 9th, Brandon Murray went two thirds, allowing 2 hits, 2 runs, and a walk as the Cardinals increased their lead. Josh Walker ended the inning but the damage was already done.

USF has dropped 5 straight and now they will play the rest of the season on the road, starting with a trip to Miami to take on FIU on Wednesday at 6 PM. Things aren’t going well right now, in fact, its bad (time to stop sugar coating things). How much fight is left in this team? We will find out in the next two weeks.
