Game preview: USF baseball takes on UNF

Posted: April 29, 2014 in Baseball

Luke Maglich and company tallied 12 runs in the win over UNF earlier in the season.

The Bulls are 24-19, 10-8 in the AAC. Their chances of the postseason are slim at best right now and they will need as many wins as possible as the season slowly comes to a close. They will get a chance with UNF coming to town (game begins at 6 PM). UNF is 19-24 on the season and 4-17 on the road. The Bulls beat the Ospreys back on February 16th by a final score of 12 to 1.

In the winning effort, Kyle Teaf went 2 for 5 with 2 runs, Luke Maglich went 3 for 5 with 2 runs and 2 RBIs, Daniel Portales went 3 for 6 and Luke Borders went 2 for 3 with 2 runs scored and an RBI. On the mound, Brandon Lawson, who is slated to get the start tonight, went 5 innings, allowing just 5 hits, 1 run, 4 walks and struck out 1 batter in the winning effort.

While the Ospreys have struggled on the mound this season (team ERA of 4.98), they have swung the bats well and have a deep batting order. Freshman catcher Alex Merritt is batting .303 on the season and has 12 RBIs, he went 3 for 4 against USF in the first meeting (only Osprey to have multiple hits in the game). Junior outfielder Drew Week is batting .447 with 10 doubles, 4 triples, 6 home runs, and has 35 RBIs on the season. Sophomore infielder Corbin Omstead is batting .357 with 9 doubles, 8 home runs and has driven in 27 runs. Junior 3B Trent Higginbothem is batting .345 with 6 home runs and leads the team with 44 RBIs, rounding out their loaded batting order. The USF bullpen, which has been shaky at times in the past previous weeks, will have to be at their best in order to eliminate any late inning threats the Ospreys attempt with their loaded batting order.

After this game, the Bulls will host 10th ranked Louisville to close out the home portion of their schedule. Building a little momentum before that series with a win over UNF would be nice.
