Matt Floyd named starter, corners and strong side linebacker named too

After guessing for weeks who would be the starter, sophomore Matt Floyd has been named the starter per Greg Auman.  The 6’1″ 202 lb. redshirt sophomore has shown playmaking ability this fall, although he did struggle at times with mistakes (per Auman and Coach Taggart).

Last season, Floyd struggled late in the year during the spiral that was the end of our season.  Floyd appeared in 7 games, completing 57 out of 110 attempts for 466 yards, but completed just 51% of those passes and threw 5 interceptions, no touchdowns.  While Floyd struggled last season, not all the blame can be put on him.  The lack of coaching last season didn’t do him any good and the fresh start with Coach Taggart could be what he needs to get his career going.  I have continued to say that Steven Bench would get the job, but after hearing all the reports the past weeks, it was more clear that Floyd would get the job.

Two other positions were named as well (all via Auman).  Sophomore Kenneth Durden and walk-on senior Brandon Salinas, have been named the starters at corner.  Durden, the 6′ 173 lb. redshirt sophomore, had 10 tackles last season for the Bulls, playing sparingly as a reserve.  Durden rose this spring, displaying all of his skills and has proven he is ready for the starting job.  Salinas, now on scholarship, was out of football last season but proved himself all off season and now has gained the starting job.  Guys like Chris Bivins, Hassan Childs, Lamar Robbins, etc. will get playing time, but will have to rotate in.

At strong side linebacker, sophomore Zack Bullock has edged out sophomore Tashon Whitehurst at the position.  Bullock played sparingly last season, totaling just 7 tackles while Whitehurst saw more playing time late in the year, recording 15 tackles including 1.5 TFL.  This was a bit of a surprise to me, but Bullock has a lot of athletic ability and the position was neck and neck all fall.  I would expect to see Whitehurst play a lot, even if he is coming off of the bench.

So there we have it folks, what do you think of these decisions by Coach Taggart?
