Unit Analysis: Defensive line

Aaron Lynch is getting all the attention, but the rest of the USF defensive line roster is talented and should be fun to watch this season.

The Bulls have a loaded roster at defensive line for the 2013 season and without much an argument, it will be the strength of the team this year.  With the addition of Aaron Lynch, this unit could have a special season.  Let’s see what they bring to the table in 2013.

The Bulls underachieved a bit in 2012 up front.  Ryne Giddins wasn’t himself due to a shoulder injury, but other players stepped up.

2012 unit recap:

Julius Forte – 6’2″ 260 lbs. – Redshirt junior – 14 tackles, 1.5 TFL (.5 sack)

Ryne Giddins – 6’3″ 266 lbs. – Redshirt junior – 25 tackles, 4 TFL (3.5 sacks)

Guito Ervilus – 6’4″ 252 lbs. – Freshman – No stats recorded, took redshirt

Soslan Gagloev – 6’4″ 308 lbs. – Junior – No stats recorded

James Hamilton – 6’2″ 324 lbs. – Freshman – 12 tackles, 1 TFL

Anthony Hill – 6’4″ 283 lbs. – Senior – Tore ACL in spring, took medical redshirt

Stefan Konjanovski – 6’2″ 295 lbs. – Senior – No stats recorded, walk on

Eric Lee – 6’3″ 240 lbs. – Freshman – 17 tackles, 1.5 TFL

Aaron Lynch – 6’6″ 262 lbs. – Sophomore – Forced to sit out the year, transfer from ND

Tevin Mims – 6’3″ 245 lbs. – Junior – 35 tackles, 3.5 TFL (2 sacks)

Clavion Nelson – 6’3″ 274 lbs. – Redshirt freshman – Took redshirt, moved from defensive end to defensive tackle

Daniel Perry – 6’2″ 250 lbs. – Freshman – Redshirted

Elkino Watson – 6’2″ 293 lbs. – Sophomore – 22 tackles, 7 TFL (2 sacks), 1 INT (yep)

Todd Chandler – 6′ 312 lbs. – Redshirt sophomore – 19 tackles, 5 TFL (2 sacks)

Cory Grissom – 6’2″ 316 lbs. – Redshirt senior – 38 tackles, 7.5 TFL (2 sacks)

Luke Sager – 6’3″ 297 lbs. – Redshirt junior – 28 tackles, 3 TFL

Demi Thompson – 6’1″ 288 lbs. – Redshirt junior – 1 tackle

At the end of the year, the Bulls lost a few contributors to the defensive line:

Guito Ervilus – Moved from defensive line back to tight end

Soslan Gagloev – left before the spring started

Colton Hudson – Left team, graduated

Stefan Konjanovski – Left team

Cory Grissom – Graduated

The Bulls added a lot of talent in the 2013 class:

DE Mike Love – 6’3″ 210 lbs. – 3-stars

DE Eric Mayes – 6’4″ 240 lbs. – 3-stars – Didn’t meet academic standards, taking classes at junior college, hopes to enroll by January for USF

DT Derrick Calloway – 6’1″ 310 lbs. – 4-stars

DT Bruce Hector – 6’2″ 270 lbs. – 2-stars

DT Deadrin Senat – 6’1″ 311 lbs. – 3-stars

Joining the talented recruiting class, this is the Bulls returning roster for the 2013 season:

Daniel Awoleke – 6’5″ 256 lbs. – Sophomore

Julius Forte – 6’2″ 253 lbs. – Redshirt senior

Ryne Giddins – 6’3″ 253 lbs. – Redshirt senior

Lamariel James – 6’2″ 271 lbs. – Junior

James Hamilton – 6’2″ 308 lbs. – Sophomore

Anthony Hill – 6’4″ 281 lbs. – Redshirt senior

Eric Lee – 6’3″ 230 lbs. – Sophomore

Aaron Lynch – 6’6″ 244 lbs. – Redshirt sophomore

Tevin Mims – 6’3 240 lbs. – Senior

Clavion Nelson – 6’3″ 289 lbs. – Redshirt sophomore

Daniel Perry – 6’7″ 248 lbs. – Redshirt freshman

Elkino Watson – 6’2″ 286 lbs. – Junior

Todd Chandler – 6′ 317 lbs. – Redshirt junior

Kieran Pettus – 6’3″ 234 lbs. – Sophomore

Luke Sager – 6’3″ 275 lbs. – Redshirt senior

The Bulls are back for 2013 and the defensive line is loaded.  Aaron Lynch is now free to attack quarterbacks and has already gotten attention from around the nation.  Giddins could be limited with that lingering shoulder injury, but Forte and Mims are solid contenders.  Eric Lee will see playing time after playing as a true freshman and Daniel Perry is a sleeper to remember.  Up front, Sager and Chandler are the big guys to watch with Hamilton and Watson pushing them for playing time.  The Bulls are two deep strong across the board and with the talented recruiting class that was added, the Bulls line has become the strength of the defense.

Here is an attempt to figure out the defensive line depth chart:

DE Aaron Lynch – Tevin Mims

DE Ryne Giddins – Julius Forte

DT Luke Sager – Elkino Watson

DT Todd Chandler – James Hamilton

Overall grade: B+

The grade is fairly high and could be higher, depending on the status of Giddins and what Lynch does this season (he has sat out a year).  This unit should have a much higher grade at the end of the season.  Look for them to put up great stats across the boards and help the defense attempt to return to its former glory.
